Doctor Squid News
Jul 27 2010: So I have two concerts to tell you about.
The first one is ours. We're playing the Melting Point on Wednesday August 11th with our good friends Groove Tangent. But as a special treat, Jason Harwell of the Warm Fuzzies will be opening the night with a special acoustic performance.
I say "special" because it has come to my attention that Jason never actually plays solo shows anymore. But as anyone who's seen his band knows, he's a very talented fellow, and this rare set is not to be missed. Aside from that, Groove Tangent is fresh out of the studio and ready to rock your face with not only new covers, but even some originals. Check out their latest tracks on their their Facebook. Finally, Doctor Squid is trying our damndest to have as much new material for you as possible. Expect at least 2 fresh new tunes from us.
The other show I speak of is the supposedly last show of local band Romanenko. We've played with them a couple of times over the past couple years (including Squidmas '09), I've played their CD a great many times (which as far as I know is not available anywhere other than at their shows, another good reason to attend), and I can easily place them among my favorite Athens groups. I'm sad to see them go, but trust me when I say that if you haven't seen them before, you'll have missed out in a big way if you don't see them July 30th at Little Kings.
That's all for now. See you on the 11th.

Jul 19 2010: Why is it that we looked more like Athens rockers five years ago than we do now?

Jun 22 2010: Here's a song I did that will probably never be a Doctor Squid song. But I'm putting it here anyway since you might like it and I know you need something to hold you over. Happy listening.

For Doctor Squid's part, we won't be playing during Athfest (sorry), but we do have a show coming up at Last Call. Details soon.

Apr 28 2010: I think it's about that time again. Time for me to vaguely gesture in the direction of answering "What is Doctor Squid up to?".
Well firstly, we've got a show coming up at Rye Bar. We'll be playing with the Border Lions and the Woodgrains. Check them out, you'll enjoy them. This will be our last real show before the summer (which is always dodgy), so don't miss it. If you have requests, do let us know. Additionally, Doctor Squid was picked (along with some great acts we've played with before, including Richard Sherfey & All God's Children, Leaving Araby, and James Patrick Morgan) to play at the Southern A&R Expo at the Melting Point. This is a cool opportunity for us to play to some record company people, and could be a big step for us if we impress them. So, even though we're only playing one song, we'd appreciate you coming out and supporting us, and of course sticking around for a sampling of all the best bands in Athens (by somebody's standard anyway). We play first at 7:00 sharp!
Aside from that, it seems we're finally hitting our stride on new material. We'll be playing a brand new tune at the aforementioned Rye Bar gig, and we've got 2 more we're currently learning. Plus some others we haven't been able to turn our attention to yet. What I'm saying is, Doctor Squid is gathering some creative momentum that will hopefully culminate in a follow up CD, perhaps in the winter. We're pretty excited about some of these newer songs. Demos will inevitably result, so join the Squidlist if you haven't already.
Online news: Turns out that College Battle of the Bands has a wildcard slot open. I sort of put this behind me already, but for whatever it's worth, votes and plays are still welcome on our page (please no bots), and could help us get selected. Additionally, I finally caved in... you can follow us on Twitter at twitter.com/squidmd. A warning: tweets will be few and far between until I figure out how to sync the damned thing with Facebook... which has proven difficult. Maybe tasks like this will become simpler now that Facebook owns the internet.
Lastly, likely Athfest slot at Rye. Stay tuned for details.

Apr 2 2010: Folks, we've got a lot of shows coming up.
The details are still a bit shifty, I'm doing my best to keep the info in the sidebar current. But here's a summary:
WUOG is having an underwater-themed dance party on April 9th, benefiting, I believe, feral cat related efforts. Not sure what the connection is there, but it should be a fun evening. We've actually got a second gig that night, which you either know about or you don't.
You've got lots of chances to see us for free. On the subject of benefit shows, we're playing at the Tate Plaza for Take Back The Night, an event to raise awareness of sexual assault. That one will also feature exactly one other talented Athens group.
We're also playing Tate for Local Bands Live from 10:30 to noon on Friday the 16th. So come hear us between classes if you've got nothing better to do.
Lastly, the big one: Bearstock at Mercer University. This is a big, all-day festival with some pretty well known acts closing out the evening. We'll only play for about 30 minutes, but there are plenty of other good bands to hear, so if you're within driving distance, this could be a cool way to spend your day.
